Willow: A Vermilion Bird Constellation

Key Star: Delta Hya (Delta Hydrae)

Willow has eight stars. Ancient Chinese Astrologers named it Lieu, a willow branch ruled by Saturn. Willow governed the planets and was worshipped by early Chinese people at the summer solstice as an emblem of immortality.* When the moon passes through this constellation, a Portent would be:

Nothing should be undertaken on this day. The omens also warn against funeral ceremonies. Faults and harmful actions are followed by discord, illness and ruin.**

Early Arabian Astrologers called Willow Al Tarf and interpreted as follows:

The Glance (of the Lion's Eye). Hinders harvest and travelers and causes discord. With Moon here, plant, build, marry, but do not travel.*

In India, ancient Astrologers called Willow Aslesha, and described this portent:

A sharp asterism belonging to the lowest caste and favorable for punishment, torture, imprisonment, exorcism, mesmerism and separation or union when containing the Moon. Those born on the lunar day will deal in perfumes, roots, fruits, reptiles and poison, will be skilled in medicine and dishonest. With Moon here at birth native will be dishonest, ungrateful, a clever swindler and a promiscuous eater. Rules dust heaps and the ears or lower lip.*
